Lanier Golf Course Purchase by Forsyth County

ISSUE:   Possible purchase of Lanier Golf Course by Forsyth County
SGFC LEADS:  Claudia Castro, Kristin Morrissey, Vern Zachgo

BACKGROUND:
  172 acre golf course in danger of being developed as single family, multi-family and commercial/mixed use (more history at www.lanierlifestyles.com).   Opponents of any development would like to see the golf course purchased by Forsyth County as a recreational, revenue-generating center.  At issue is source of funding and if the golf course should be purchased using the Greenspace portion of the Parks/Recreational and Greenspace $100 million Bond.

SMART GROWTH FORSYTH COUNTY POSITION:


1. SGFC supports the purchase of the Lanier Golf course by Forsyth County as a public recreational facility.  SGFC supports the use of recreational funds to include the non-greenspace, $64 million active recreation portions of the $100 million Park/Recreation and Greenspace Bond, SPLOST dollars and impact fees.

2. SGFC supports the purchase of the Lanier Golf Course by Forsyth County as passive greenspace, to include use of any remaining portion of the $36 million greenspace funds if the property is allowed to revert to passive greenspace in perpetuity.

3. Under no circumstances does SGFC support further development of the property, either for single family residential, high density residential or commercial/mixed use or other uses.
